It would naturally be expected that when visiting an island such as Skye, traditional music would be played from the Skye Bridge to every corner of the island. This is true to a large extent, proudly reflecting the wealth of talented musicians we have living here who are steeped in traditional music traditions. We are fortunate indeed to have such a rich traditional music heritage to inspire us. However, we are also proud of the fact that the communities of Skye & Lochalsh have a very wide range of taste in music. Musicians from all genres choose Skye as 'home' or know it affectionately as a favourite place where they 'come home' to perform. Various festivals strive to include all types of music including jazz, rock, traditional, contemporary, country and more to attract local audiences and visitors to the area.
Within the many festivals that take place in Skye, it is apparent that the younger generation of the island are also interested in a wide variety of music, as we see young performers emerging onto festival platforms to demonstrate their talented skills along with their peers. The Fčisean movement has done tremendous work encouraging youngsters to learn more about traditional music, the Gaelic language and their heritage. Drawing on these sources of vibrant inspiration and coupled with other musical interests they create an eclectic mix of sound.
All year round the island is filled with music. Be it at one of the many festivals or in one of Skye's renowned venues, you'll capture the essence of Skye and further beyond. Touching your soul, and stirring your spirit it will call you back for more.
