The most dramatic range of mountains in Britain The Cuillin, are here on the Isle of Skye. The Black Cuillin with their tall, dark, jagged peaks form the main Cuillin Ridge, the more rounded eastern hills are known as the Red Cuillin. The Cuillin Hills are the remains of the roots of an early Tertiary volcanic centre. The Black Cuillin are mostly composed of gabbro, the Red Cuillin are granite.

The Cuillin is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, a Special Protection Area and a Special Area of Conservation. The 29,490 hectare Cuillins Golden Eagle Special protection Area supports several breeding pairs of Golden Eagle. You may see one at any time within this area.
